It's been a very busy few weeks in third grade! Thank you for meeting with me over the past two weeks to talk about your kids! It was such a pleasure to get to meet, talk and share with you! Here's a bit about what's been going on... reader's workshopOur informational text unit is about to come to a close. While it's been a ton of fun and we have learned a tremendous amount about all sorts of interesting topics, I think we are all ready to move on and jump back into our fiction books. The last part of the unit focused on narrative nonfiction. I saw some great interest from the kids into biographies; specifically the Who Was series. Later in the year, we will focus in on biographies and the kids will have even more opportunities to read about some of our great leaders and inventors! We learned about how to read a narrative nonfiction book, both like a story and an informational text. Here were a few of our favorites: writer's workshopThe kids are hard at work with their informational pieces! We have written and revised several versions of our Table of Contents and are now organizing and drafting the individual chapters. Some kids have found places where they need to learn a bit more about their topic and have done some guided research to answer specific questions. We will continue this work and hope to bring these pieces to publication by December. It really is amazing to see how much they have grown as writers in just a few short months! I am very proud of the hard work they are putting into their writing! mathWe wrapped up unit 2 and took the assessment, which the kids did an amazing job on! Thank you for sending those back to school so I can keep them in my files! Unit 3 focuses on measurement. We will cover the concepts of perimeter, circumference and area. We will hopefully be able to finish up this unit and take the assessment before the Thanksgiving break. Also, just as a reminder, there are 2 logins taped to the inside of your child's assignment notebook. One for Everydath Math and one for a math facts program called XtraMath. Please practice at home when you can! social studiesWe are learning about communities; their similarities and differences and what they are made up of. To up wrap up this unit, we will be creating a brochure of a community of choice. A letter will be coming home describing this project in more detail. scienceThis week, the kids created an investigation plan for how to determine how many grams of water a dry sponge could soak up. They then condiucted the experiment. They also created a plan for how to determine how much water a wet sponge could soak up. We will conduct this experiment next week, compare the results in our data and draw conclusions based on that data.
Thank you Grandma Patty (Jaelynn's Grandma) for the fun Baby Mustache story and for the cute mustaches!
